You can see it in the smooth, worn streets, the billboard images ghosted on brick hotels, the head frames that mark entry into what was once the “Richest Hill on Earth.” It’s no surprise that the town’s vintage architecture and colorful past are often what draw people to visit.

Yet once they turn off I-90 and into town, visitors quickly discover that in Butte it isn’t only brick and mortar that have been preserved. The spirit, individuality and pride of the people here are as palpable as the day someone first cried “Gold!” down on Silver Bow Creek. It’s that same character that enchants, that wide-armed hospitality that invites.

The Butte Chamber of Commerce welcomes you to stop on in to their visitor center and pick up a new Visitor Guide to enhance your stay. Let them help you enjoy a walking tour, a trolley ride about town, a scenic drive through its unique countryside, or a trip back through time as you discover Butte’s intriguing history. It’s rich heritage has been well preserved and is readily accessible for those curious few.

Boasting “A Landscape as Alluring as the Wealth Beneath it”, you will find no shortage in activities to choose from. The surrounding rivers, lakes and ranges have every bit as much allure as they once did over a century ago. From Butte, you’re only a short drive from hiking the Highland Mountains, fishing the Big Hole River, boating Georgetown Lake, skiing Discovery Basin or golfing the Jack Nicklaus-designed Old Works course, the Butte Country Club Course and Fairmont Hot Springs Resort’s Golf Course. Opportunities for scenic drives, landscape photography, picnicking, mountain biking, wildlife viewing and more are abundant within this area. So bring your gear of choice, your camera, plenty of film and discover for yourself why so many find Butte almost as difficult to leave as it is to visit.
