Chinook - from an Indian word meaning “warm wind” - is on Lodge Creek where it empties into the Milk River. At the Blaine county Museum are military and Nez Perce artifacts from the Bear Paw Battle, the last major Indian battle in the United States. The Bear Paw Battlefield south of town, is the site of the 1877 surrender of Chief Joseph. Railroad enthusiasts will enjoy the history of the area. The annual Sugarbeet Festival and the Fall Fiesta celebrate the region’s rich heritage.
